Daily Rare Coin Update

July 23, 2009 – High relief Double Eagles are some of the most sought after rare coins because this exclusive version of the $20 Saint-Gaudens was only produced in very small quantities throughout its first year of minting in 1907. Famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the design for the high relief Double Eagles, and his intention was to design an American coinage that rivalled the beauty of ancient Greek coinage. Thus, this American masterpiece was created, yet banks and investors were having a very difficult time storing these coins because the high relief made it nearly impossible to stack them. The United States Mint produced slightly more than 11,000 of these coinages, and then they halted minting forever in order to create the same coin with a much lower relief.

As far as investing is concerned, the high relief Double Eagles are not considered investment-grade rare coins because since they are very rare and hard to come by, they carry a significantly high rarity premium. For example, several high relief Double Eagles cost between $100,000 and $3,000,000 while standard investment-grade Double Eagles cost between $1000 and $2500. Big difference. Although these high relief coins are exclusive and beautiful, it’s best that investors leave them to collectors who are willing to spend massive amounts of money on a single coin that only has 1-ounce of gold in it.
