Daily Rare Coin Market Update
July 30, 2009 – When it comes to investing in rare coins, there are few coins that are very popular amongst investors, and today I would like to discuss the popular Indian Head gold coins that have become a favorite to many Americans nationwide. The gold Indian coins were minted between 1907-1933 and being that they were not popular coins at the time, the United States Mint produced very little of them. Their design is considered one of the most unique designs on American coinage because it features Lady Liberty with a feathered Indian headdress on the obverse side and a proud gold eagle on the reverse side. The history around their creation began with President Theodore Roosevelt wanting to beautify American coinage to look more like Greek coinage, thus he contracted famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create these American masterpieces.
As far as investing is concerned, the gold Indian coins usually hold higher premiums than the more popular investment-grade rare coins like the $20 Saint-Gaudens and $20 Lady Liberty because they are smaller in size and their production was limited. Most investors purchase these gold Indian coins for long-term wealth preservation because they have proven their ability to increase in value in investment portfolios when held longer than 14 months and preferably longer than three years. These coins are not recommended for short-term profit taking because investors prefer to use them as long-term tools that increase in value over the years. After all, do you know of any antiques that lose value as the years pass by?
