Rare Coin Values
Rare coin values can first be subcategorized as certified, or non-certified. The inherent, numismatic value that rare coins possess, can now be verified by two rare coin appraisal companies, the PCGS, (Professional Coin Grading Service), and the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation). These two companies are globally recognized rare coin assayers, and coins that have been certified by one or both of these entities, are liquid in over 120 countries worldwide. For a nominal fee, each of these companies employs a team of rare coin experts to evaluate rare coins, and assign each coin an official “mint state grade”, which designates its’ numismatic value. Investors can log onto www.pcgs.com, or www.ngccoin.com, for the latest retail prices on popular certified coins like $20 Lady Liberty’s and $20 Saint Gaudens.
Rare coin values are further subcategorized among certified coins, according to their assigned mint state grade. There are a great many investors, whose primary concern is long-term financial stability. Consequently, these investors purchase certified rare coins like the aforementioned Lady Liberty’s and Saint Gaudens. To maximize their long-term investment potential, investment quality mint state grades usually range between 61, and 66, with the highest possible mint state grade being 70. Certified coins with a mint state grades between 67 and 70, are generally reserved for collectors, and command an exponentially higher premium.
