Tuesday, December 15th, 2009The popularity of $20 Lady Liberty coins is growing with each passing day, as more and more investors are discovering the benefits of rare coin diversification. There are a great number of investors who have recently converted their portfolios and retirement accounts from stocks and bonds investments into precious metals, and their attention is now focused on diversifying their new precious metals holdings into investments like $20 Lady Liberty coins, for financial protection and potential future profit. Rare coin investment has traditionally been considered ideal for long-term precious metal investment diversification, as rare coins’ numismatic value tends to appreciate over time. The following is a brief overview of $20 Lady Liberty coins.
The inspiration for these beautiful coins originated with the 1849 California gold rush, but coins weren’t minted for circulation until 1850. Lady Liberty coins contain nearly one Troy ounce of pure gold, and were designed by James Longacre. The obverse side of these coins portrays a profiled image of Lady Liberty, facing left, and her head is adorned with a coronet. Thirteen stars encircle her, to represent the original thirteen colonies. The reverse side of the coin features an American bald eagle, hovering with his wings spread, and a coat of arms over his breast. The motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST” was omitted from the original $20 Lady Liberty coins, but later added in 1866. Also, the inscription, “TWENTY DOLLARS” replaced the original, “TWENTY D.” in 1877. Both inscriptions are found on the reverse side of the coin, beneath the eagle. It is recommended for investors to officially certify the numismatic value of their rare gold coins through only the PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), or the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation).
